Travel to Cozumel

So you're traveling south of the border, to a place considered paradise by many. There's a few things to keep in mind for your travels. It is best to travel with a passport. While you can still travel to Mexico with an original birth certificate, I highly recommend getting the passport, as it will save on time and possible confusion going through Mexico Immigration. Plus, in the near future, passports will be required for travel to Mexico.

Cozumel is a very safe place to visit. The island has all the major conveniences of any travel destination: a modern airport, ATMs, cellular phone service, and high-speed Internet access. Yet, the island has retained the charm of it Mayan/Mexican roots, and the local population maintains strong traditional values.

Packing Tips:

  • Passport - At the beginning of 2007, passports became a requirement for travel to Mexico. We encourage you to apply early for a passport to allow plenty of time for processing.
  • Pack comfy clothes - It will be quite warm, and shorts and t-shirts are normal attire.
  • Small Bills - Small bills are perfect for cab fares and tips. No need to change to Mexican currency, as American currency is accepted (and even preferred in many cases). The exchange rate at most places is 10 pesos to the dollar.
  • Divers - Pack gear separately from clothes. Flying down, this is not a big deal, but coming back you'll greatly appreciate not having your wardrobe smelling like wet, moldy scuba gear.
  • Sun screen, sun glasses, and of course, beach attire - Remember, Cozumel is a tropical environment!

Things to Leave at Home:

  • Dive Knives - It is illegal to carry a dive knife on any dive in Cozumel. This is a protected marine sanctuary, and there is nothing to get tangled on underwater.
  • Dive Gloves - Many dive operators do not allow dive gloves. This helps eliminate the temptation of touching the reef. If you want to bring a pair of reef gloves, I would recommend keeping them in your BC pocket. That way you can put them on if needed.
  • Stress - This is a vacation! Leave the stress and work behind!!! :)
